The exercise test explained
Test procedure
This test is performed indoors on your own bike. The controlled environment ensures that you can cycle steadily at a certain intensity. The protocol takes 30-50 minutes.
It starts at a low wattage so that the body can warm up. The intensity is increased every 5 minutes. The athlete is instructed to cycle as far as possible in the protocol. At the end of each step, data such as heart rate and lactate is collected.
Lactate measurement
Lactate is a substance that is produced in the body when carbohydrates are burned. The amount of this value says something about your efficiency at that intensity. In principle, you want to delay carbohydrate burning for as long as possible, as this supply in your body is limited, in contrast to your supply of fats. Lactate can be measured via the blood. A small hole is pierced in the earlobe where a drop of blood is extracted.
Reporting
Based on these lactate values, the aerobic and anaerobic thresholds can be determined. These thresholds are important to know if you specifically want to improve on something, such as climbing, time trial, criteria or mountain bike marathons.
You will eventually receive your personal data related to the test in a report.

It is crucial to do a bike fit first before undergoing the exercise test. These two parts may not take place on the same day. After the bike fit, it is important to get used to the new position for at least 2 weeks, with a preference for 6 weeks, in order to perform optimally during the exercise test.
