Insoles for cycling shoes

Insoles for cycling shoes

The effectiveness of an insole can be highly personal. Various factors can influence how an individual responds to being supported. In this blog, you can read about the possible considerations for this.

Every cycling shoe has a standard foam sole that does not support the foot. Personally, I always call this not wrong but certainly not right either. Once the shoe is produced, people obviously do not know what type of foot will be in the shoe. A flat, soft sole is then always the safe option.

Specifically for cycling, there are a few studies that have looked at the effects of arch support with soles for cyclists and other cyclists. Here are some of the findings from the study:

  1. Performance improvement: Some studies suggest that using arch support can help improve performance and reduce fatigue while cycling. For example, a study published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport found that wearing custom-made insoles resulted in improved pedaling technique and reduced fatigue among cyclists.
  2. Comfort and stability: Wearing insoles with arch support can also provide more comfort and stability when pedaling, especially on longer rides. This can help reduce pressure points and prevent injuries, such as hot spots and nerve irritation.
  3. Correction of biomechanical abnormalities: For cyclists with specific biomechanical abnormalities, such as overpronation or supination, custom insoles with arch support can help correct these problems. This can contribute to more efficient pedal movement and prevent overload injuries.
  4. Individual differences: As mentioned earlier, there is a lot of variability among individuals when it comes to the effects of arch support. What works for one cyclist may not work for another. It is important to consider individual needs and circumstances when considering the use of insoles.

Overall, these findings suggest that arch support may be beneficial for some cyclists, especially those who have specific foot problems or are looking for improved performance and comfort while cycling. However, it can also depend on each cyclist's individual preferences and circumstances.

To get the maximum result from the soles, it is important that the entire position on the bike is good. For example, if your saddle is too high, this will result in a different pressure load on the feet than with a correct saddle position. More information about this can be found in my other blog: “Numbness and tingling feet while cycling”.

I myself work with Sidas products, which allow me to make custom insoles. From practice, I have personally experienced that most of the customers respond positively to these custom-made insoles. These insoles are specially designed based on the exact shape and needs of the individual customer's foot. This ensures an optimal fit, maximum support and comfort. Sidas soles are usually the same thickness as a standard bicycle sole and therefore do not take up extra space in the shoe. You will notice that the shoe fits better immediately with an insole. A cycling shoe often has little internal volume, so it is not the intention to put a thick sole with multiple layers of construction in it either.

The Sidas insoles are made on site in the bike fit studio and can also be taken home to use immediately. In case of specific symptoms, it may also be advisable to contact a podiatrist specialized in bike-specific foot problems.
